William Strang etching - Joseph Benwell Clark

William Strang(1859-1921):Joseph Benwell Clark (1884)

Born in Dumbarton, Strang trained at the Slade School under Legros, and achieved fame as an etcher and as a painter of portraits and genre scenes. This powerfull etching is a portrait of the painter and etcher Joseph Benwell Clark(1857-1938). This plate illustrates Strang's powerfull austere drawing and lucid realisation of form. The plate has been left expressively blank, emulating and paying homage to the etchings of Van Dyck.
