Joseph Simpson(1879-1939): Portrait of James Pryde(c.1926)
Simpson did his first etchings at the age of 45 using a gramaphone
needle and a printing press which he borrowed from a local Carlisle
printing company. He first exhibited these early etchings in Glasgow
in 1926 (Wishart Brown) and later in the year in London (Alex,
Reid and Lefevre). His friend the painter Jimmy Pryde is shown
here deep in thought and dressed elegantly in a top hat.
