Joseph Simpson(1879-1939): Portrait of James Pryde(c.1926)

Simpson did his first etchings at the age of 45 using a gramaphone needle and a printing press which he borrowed from a local Carlisle printing company.He first exhibited these early etchings in Glasgow in 1926 (Wishart Brown) and later in the year in London (Alex, Reid and Lefevre). His friend the painter Jimmy Pryde is shown here deep in thought and dressed elegantly in a top hat.
