Joseph Simpson(1879-1939): Robert Burns(early 1900's
?)
This woodcut print of Scotland's national poet owes much to
the style of the Beggarstaff Brothers - the bold silhouette and
simplified lines. Simpson was born in Carlisle and studied at
the Glasgow School of Art. He was a prolific illustrator, etcher
and cartoonist, and was an official war artist in 1918. He painted
in a bold manner similar to the Scottish Colourists. His friends
included James Pryde, Frank Brangwyn and J.D.Fergusson. Heavy
drinking blighted his later years.
